Thanks. I've been wondering about this for a while.
ReplyDeleteThis is very useful! Thank you! However, I have a question? Is 같애 the short form of 같다고 해?
ReplyDeleteNo, 같다고 해 is not the short form of 같애.
ReplyDeleteBut whereas 같애 is used to express what "I" think, 같다고 해 is used to express what "they/he/she think(s)" when talking to someone.
And 같다고 해 is usually shortened to 같대 in spoken Korean.
For eg,
민수는 내가 키가 큰 거 같대. = Minsu thinks I'm tall.
사라는 트랜스포머가 재밌는 거 같대 = Sarah thinks that Transformers is fun.
준민이는 지난 세미나가 성공적이었던 거 같대. = Jun-min thinks that the last seminar was successful.
Thank you for bring it up, Juanita! I've added an additional explanation on 같대.
ReplyDeleteI came across your blog while searching on korean grammar. It's really great. ^^
ReplyDelete감사합니다. 도움이 많이 되었어요.
THANKS! Your blog helps me a lot!
ReplyDeleteThank you soooooooo much!!! I have been looking and looking for a place to teach myself Korean, and this is perfect! So helpful and clear!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhy is 같다 not translated to 같아요?
ReplyDeleteHey thanks for explaining this :) really helpful
ReplyDeleteBut just bc I was curious .. Is there a way to use this with future tense? For example
"I think this will be fun?"
Yes, you can.
ReplyDelete"I think this will be fun."
= 이거 재미있을 거 같애.
재미있는 거 같애 = I think it's fun
재미있을 거 같애 = I think it will be fun
재미있었던 거 같애 = I think it was fun
좋은 거 같애 = I think it's good
좋을 거 같애 = I think it will be good
좋았던 거 같애 = I think it was good
Are 생각하다 and -는 것 같애 different. Or is it just that one is a ending conjugation and one is a pure verb but can be used the same?
ReplyDeleteI think she is pretty
I think you are beautiful
I think this will be fun
etc..
Are -ㄴ/는 것 같다 and 생각하다 different or can they be used similarly?
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI think she is pretty
= 그녀는 예쁜 거 같애
I think you're beautiful
= 너 예쁜 거 같애
I think this will be fun
= 이거 재미있을 거 같애
Usually, ~거 같애 is used in conversations.
~생각해
예쁘다고 생각해
재밌다고 생각해
sound more formal and rarely used in conversations.
But they basically mean the same.
생각하다 is probably more frequently used in writing.
thank you so much for your blog but i have a question, what is the difference of 같았어 from 였던 거 같애. Also, i don't know why 자고 became sleeping in 저 방에는 아기가 자고 있는 거 같애.
ReplyDeleteAlso, why 방에 has 는 in 엄마가 저 방에는 아기가 자고 있는 거 같대
and i also don't know why that sentence means "Mum thinks a baby is sleeping in that room."
sorry for asking so many questions, it's really bothering my mind right now
Again, thank you we really appreciated it :)
Hi Anonymous,
Delete같았어 and 였던 거 같애 essentially mean the same thing.
자고 있다 = am/is/are sleeping
자고 있는 = am/is/are sleeping (Descriptive I)
Please refer to Verbs - Continuous, Verbs - Descriptive I.
방에는 means 'in the room' or more specifically 'as for that room.'
"Mum thinks a baby is sleeping in that room.(in so far as that room is concerned)"
이런 블로근 바로 제가 찾던 블로그에요.

고마워요 Luke님.
So could you say: 재미있는 거 같아요. to mean "I think it's fun"?
ReplyDeleteAnd also, can you use "것" instead of "거"?
You can still use "것." Although "거" is more commonly used in spoken Korean.
DeleteCheers.
Haha, I think my question was answered in the comments. Thanks! This was helpful~
